More people in the future will have to rent their homes their whole lives. Contracts today restrict people from taking ownership of their homes; to make small renovations or even hanging photos isn’t allowed.

Hjemmekoselig is about a future where a new type of rental contract permits tenants to make changes their homes. The exhibition shows this new contact’s potential, compared to how today’s restrictions feel in a home, where the property is kept to never feel like it has been used.

You have probably, if you aren’t still, been renting a home that you live in. With renting a home comes the role as a tenant, who will respect the home as if it isn’t theirs, you live in the presence of the next tenant. If it is furnished, it might just feel like a bare minimum, and landlords seem to always have a very different taste than you, if the furniture seems stylized at all. Wall to wall carpets is often seen in British homes, which is like a recipe for accidents that landlords can charge the tenants for. Other issues with renting property are all the rules in the contract, that keep you from decorating your house into a home. Hanging things her small adjustments, you usually won’t be allowed to.

So what if all these struggles could be solved? Hjemmekoselig is about the struggle as a renter, and what a brighter future could potentially look like. And which side are you on of a contract?

As part of the Biennale in 2022 in Brighton, Hjemmekoselig is one of many exhibitions spread around the city, almost in the center of the other exhibitions. All programs titled ‘emerging Programme’ are about the future of a topic. For example, other exhibitions are about things like education or film making, in the future. This exhibition is about homes and renters right to inhabit their homes.
