U-Haul Dyke Rescue Service

Lucy Nurnberg

In the year 2043, central London is no longer a safe place for visibly queer people — or even tourists. Britain’s economy is wrecked and queer culture has been pushed back underground by a series of increasingly regressive governments. Enter the U-Haul Dyke Rescue Service, a crew who patrol the city and provide refuge and aid to queers in need. On the run from the law? Need a wardrobe assembled? Looking for a lesbian party tonight? As the secret flyers say: “Give us a U-Call”. This practical team of dykes provide their services from a fleet of electric commercial vans, stationed at their depot, an underground car park in Bloomsbury. The U-Haul Dyke Rescue operates six different vans, each with a different function: one is a mobile lesbian bar; one is a meditative cat café; one is a getaway car that opens its doors to a motorcycle rescue squad etc. This photo series gives an insight into the UHDR world.
